ELISA STRINNA

Elisa Strinna is an Italian multimedia artist based in the Netherlands who works with sculpture, film, and sound. By studying different infrastructures – from information to biotechnology – she critically investigates the interconnection between humanity, nature, and technology. Through her research, she seeks ways to question the modern approach that views the planet as a collection of materials to be exploited endlessly.

In her immersive installations, she creates microcosms, organic and mysterious atmospheres of enigmatic origin, where the dominant binary logic of the rational mind fades. In these hybrid worlds, it becomes difficult to draw a clear separation between the natural and artificial, geological and human, spiritual and material.

The websites collect the projects the artist has developed over the past six years: Blind Sun, People Will Miss the Earth, and My Body is a Plant. Each project is an ongoing journey. Blind Sun travels from the ocean's depths to the far reaches of interstellar space. It investigates how communication infrastructures, such as underwater fiber optics and satellites, affect our environment and the implications of their production and disposal. People Will Miss the Earth shifts its focus to the survival of humans and plants in extreme environments. From the expanses of Antarctica and arid deserts to the International Space Station and the Moon, this project explores the conditions necessary for life to thrive in harsh settings, developing a critique of colonial terraforming and instead reflecting on feminist worlding practices. Finally, My Body is a Plant examines how extreme lifestyles can lead to mental and emotional suffering. By studying the healing properties and the ecosystemic relationships of plants that grow spontaneously in our surroundings, this research develops practices for multispecies repair and coexistence.

Strinna’s work has been exhibited at IFFR (2023), Radius CCA (2022), documenta fifteen (2022), Tale of a Tub (2021), Culturgest Porto (2020), Fidelidade Arte Museum (2019), Hong-gah Museum (2018), Serra dei Giardini of the Venice Biennale (2015), MART Museum (2015), MAXXI Museum (2014), EACC Museum (2013), Taipei Biennial (2012), MACRO Museum (2011), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (2009), among others. She received an MFA in Visual Arts from IUAV (Venice, 2011) and a post-diploma in Documents and Contemporary Art from ÉESI (France, 2017). In 2018/19, Elisa Strinna participated in the international residency programme at Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht.

The projects have been realised thanks to the support of Mondriaan Fund, CBK Rotterdam, Het Cultuur Fonds, Stichting Droom en Daad, documenta fifteen.
